Securing the Season: A Guide to Protecting Yourself from Online Scams this Christmas

Laptop surrounded but Christmas presents and decorations

The Christmas season is upon us which unfortunately means a rise in online scams. Being vigilant and aware of people trying to take advantage of the festive spirit is important. We have put together some of our best ways to stay safe online at Christmas.

1. Update and Secure your Devices:

It's always important to take a moment to update your devices and applications. Software updates often include security patches that protect against the latest threats. Ensure that your antivirus and anti-malware programs are up to date and consider enabling automatic updates for added convenience.

2. Use Strong and Unique Passwords:

A strong password is your first line of defence against cyber threats. Create a complex password for each of your accounts. Consider using combinations of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Password1 isn't going to cut it anymore.

3. Shop from Trusted Websites:

Online shopping is the new and easy way of buying all your Christmas gifts, but it's important to buy from reputable websites. Look for the padlock symbol in the address bar, indicating a secure connection. Also, be wary of clicking on any links that advertise gifts, are you sure they are safe?

4. Use Safe Payment Methods:

When making any online purchases, you should always use a secure payment method. Credit cards usually offer better fraud protection than debit cards, however, services like PayPal can add an extra layer of security. Avoid making payments through wire transfers or unconventional methods that are difficult to trace.

5. Be Aware of Email Scams:

One of the most common scams is known as Phishing emails where cybercriminals disguise themselves as legitimate organisations or retailers. Always be aware of unexpected emails requesting personal information or payment details. Verify the legitimacy of the sender and double-check the email address before clicking any link.

6. Spread the Word:

Remind friends and family to stay vigilant and follow best practices for cybersecurity. Encourage them to use secure passwords, update their devices, and be cautious of online scams.

While the holiday season is a time for joy and celebration, it's crucial to remain vigilant against online Christmas scams. By staying informed, adopting safe online practices, and sharing knowledge within our communities, we can collectively prevent cybercriminals. This Christmas let's also exchange the gift of online safety. Stay alert, be cautious, and have a scam-free and Merry Christmas.
